While uneven suction can occur with a breast pump, it should not be possible for your motor to create different suction on each side. If this seems to be occurring, it is likely a problem with a component part or the assembly of parts.

1. Inspect the individual components of the pump 

• Are there chips, cracks, tears, or punctures in any of the parts?
• Valves should be changed about every 30 days. How old are your valves? When’s the last time you changed them?
• Check the valves and diaphragm. Are they assembled correctly and in the right position? For best seal, use a gentle twisting motion when attaching parts.
• Make sure tubing is free of twists and kinks.
• Is your breast shield size correct? Using the wrong size breast shield affects suction and milk production.
• Are the parts clean and dry? Don’t store your pumping kit in the fridge, moisture can build up and reduce suction.

2. Switch the Parts Around

• Starting with the valve, switch parts one at a time from the side that is working to the side that isn’t working.
• This should isolate the part that is causing the issue.
